HARLEY FOR SALE. SOME TIPS BEFORE BUYING A USED HARLEY DAVIDSON.
Harley For Sale. We've all seen the ads either in our local newspaper, Auto/ Motorcycle Locator magazine, or online. We all know about EBay but there are a lot of websites listing Harleys for sale. A good place to start is your local Harley-Davidson dealer. Many times the dealer knows the bike and can give you a service history.
Whenever you're looking at a Harley for sale, these guidelines should apply. Hope they help you make the right choice.
PRICE One of the reasons for buying a used Harley is price. You will want to get an idea of the value of the model you're looking for before you get started. A good place to start is either the Kelly Blue Book or NADA site. These websites are an excellent source of Harley-Davidson values and there easy to use.
FINANCING After finding out the price, you'll want to know how much it's going to cost you every month. Probably the best place to start is your bank or credit union. Most banks and credit unions finance motorcycles. Another good place is online. Many of the online banks will give you a free quote.
INSURANCE Insurance is something that is often overlooked. You definitely what to know how much the insurance is going to cost you per year. The obvious place to start would be your auto insurer. As with financing, you could find some great deals online. You can get a FREE quote from Kanetix using the link below.
MILEAGE Mileage is big factor in the price of any vehicle. If you're looking at a bike on EBay or other online motorcycle auction site, make sure there is a picture of the odometer on their listing. Base your price on mileage and overall condition.
OVERALL CONDITION Most Harley owners keep their bikes in great shape for many reasons such as pride and because they are such a big investment. You still have to find out as much as you can because you are going to have to live with the decision. Check the bike over very closely. Look for any scratches or dents. Look for any paint that's faded or does not match. Feel the engine to see if it has been run before your arrival. If the bike is a hard starter, the owner may have warmed the engine to avoid having to disclose the problem. Have the owner start the bike, and pay attention to the starting characteristics of the engine and any noises you might hear once it is running. Since Harleys tend to run on the loud side, an easy way to locate engine noise is to loosely place a rag over the end of the exhaust pipe. The cover won’t kill the engine but will muffle the exhaust noise enough to let you hear any suspect noises that may be present. Check the condition of the tires and brakes. Ask a lot of questions. You obviously want to hear it run. Try to take it for a ride and feel and listen for any mechanical problems. Check the fluids. Take a look around and see the condition of other vehicles the seller might have. If you can, come back and look at the bike a second time. You'll probably see something you missed the first time.
RARE BIKES Rare Harley for sale! As with beauty, value is in the eye of the beholder. The seller might think they are selling something rare but do your homework. If it is a rare or antique motorcycle, make sure the VIN matches the title. We have some examples of VINs and what they mean. Check the nav bar on the left.
