BUYING A HARLEY-DAVIDSON
Buying a Harley-Davidson? A new Harley is an investment, not just a purchase. They are also expensive, so knowing what you want and what you can handle is very important. Before you purchase a new bike, do some research.
If you are a newbie to motorcycling, you might consider a Sportster 883 or 1200. The Sportster is a good model to start with. It’s lighter and easy to handle. Make sure you try out the Sportster and think about how much time you’re going to be spending on it. The Sportster is a great bike but there not made for the long haul.
TOURING MODELS Models include the FLHR Road King, the FLHRC Road King Classic, the FLHX Street Glide, the FLTR Road Glide, The FLHT Electra Glide Standard, the FLHTC Electra Glide Classic, and the FLHTCU Ultra Classic Electra Glide.
V-ROD MODELS The V-Rod models for 2012 are the 10Th. Anniversary Edition, Night Rod Special and the V-Rod Muscle.
SOFTAIL MODELS Softail models include the new Blackline, the FLSTF Fat Boy, FLSTN Softail Deluxe, FLSTC Heritage, the Rocker and Cross Bones. The 2012 softail models now come with the 103 cubic inch engine.
DYNA MODELS These models include the new Switchback with the 103 cubic inch engine, FXDC Dyna Super Glide Custom, the FXDB Dyna Street Bob, the FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide and the Fat Bob.
SPORTSTER MODELS The lightest Harley you could buy, both in weight and price is a Sportster. Sportsters include the new 2011 Sportster Custom and Super Low, the Iron 883, the XL883C Sportster, the XL1200N Sportster 1200 Nightster, the XL1200R Sportster 1200 Roadster and the XL1200l Sportster 1200 Low.
CUSTOM VEHICLE OPERATIONS/CVO Models For those with a higher budget, check out the new CVO lineup. They include the new Road Glide, Ultra, Street Glide and Convertible.
Another thing to consider when buying a new Harley is that the softail models use the B motor which is balanced. The B motor has very little vibration. The touring, DYNA and Sportsters use a rubber mounted motor which gives you some vibration.
Whichever model you choose, you should try it before you buy it. Take the bike for a ride or find a dealer that rents bikes and try one for a day or two. It's part of the experience of buying a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. You may need to test-ride several models before you buy a new Harley-Davidson.
